The mission of Proper Wood Finishing is to fulfill the wood finishing and restoration needs of our clients through the application of advanced techniques and materials, paired masterfully with historical and period craftsmanship, years of industry experience, and the passion we have for our work.

About Us

The look and feel of a finely finished wood surface is a pleasure to touch and to own. It does not matter if it is a finely burled veneer on your Victorian cylinder roll-top desk or the top of the curly maple conference table in your office, they are gifts of nature that need to be preserved.

Proper Wood Finishing has practiced the art and science of fine wood restoration and wood finishing for the past thirty-five years. In that time we have served the needs of the local antique community, corporate environment, discriminating homeowners, architects, general contractors, the California State Government, the federal government, and grandma with her priceless tea cart.

The skill and expertise that we have acquired with over 70 combined years of hands-on shop experience will guide you through the finishing and restoration process. If you need work on a precious family heirloom we will identify the item’s historical significance, construction, and age, then recommend an appropriate method of conservation and/or restoration. If you are constructing new cabinetry or furniture, we will provide you with a finishing schedule that achieves your desired look, design parameters, and includes the longest lasting, highest quality finish available. Since we are very diverse in the work that we can perform for you, we encourage you to explore the numerous examples of our work, and please call us to discuss your next project or any aspect of the finishing trade.

Company History

Proper Wood Finishing has been a leader in the Bay Area’s wood refinishing industry for over thirty-five years. In that time, we have served the finishing and refinishing needs of some of the largest firms in the Bay Area. We possess a State of California Contractor’s License for painting and decorating (C-33), which was issued on August 20, 1992. Proper Wood Finishing is both licensed and bonded.

We started refinishing antique furniture out of a two car garage in March of 1978. While earning a degree in business management, I continued to learn and service a growing number of clients. We have expanded our work facilities several times in order to better handle larger and more complex projects, while still servicing our original clients. A third of our business includes antique and contemporary furniture, another third includes architectural restoration and finishing of new work, and the remainder includes the refinishing and finishing of kitchen cabinetry.
